MoblTabl–Order Management for the Mobile Age
Traditional enterprise order management (OM) systems were built at a time when Brick and Mortar stores were more prevalent. 10-15 years ago most sales were happening over a sales counter and the online sales model was still in its infancy.
Today, even the online sales model seems a bit outdated with the growth of Mobile Sales and the rise of the M-Commerce model.
So is there really a need for Order Management systems to change to reflect mobile sales? One could argue that the sales channel Online, Mobile or In-Store shouldn’t affect Order Management systems. The Order Management lifecycle after all still remains the same “Order Capture” comprised of the Quote to Order Process followed by Provisioning /Fulfillment. Most business don’t see the need to change their systems just because there is a new sales channel, Smart Phones and Tablets sales.
Lets consider a simple scenario, pick a college campus. Any campus will work. Lets put in some assumptions
- There’s a restaurant/cafeteria for students located in the south side of campus.
- The restaurant/cafeteria has been in operation for 5 years.
- The restaurant/cafeteria when it when into business installed the latest Order Management system at the time.
Today, 5 years later the campus has expanded and the business is looking at opening another location. The question is where on campus? Management decides to analyze the 5 years of data from their current Order Management system to answer the question. They realize quickly that traditional order management systems don’t really care much for where the orders came in. In this case since there was only one location all sales came in through the restaurant/cafeteria.
With the lack of data they decide to conduct a survey for the next few months asking each customer where they are living on campus to get a feel for where most of the sales are coming from.

- With the current system OM system be able to target just mobile customers or just online customers.
- Can the system understand where most of the orders are coming from or where high value products are being sold.
- Can the system help tie in store sales to M-Commerce and E-Commerce orders.
- Does the current Order Management system automatically provide a Mobile or Web presence to sell?
